I, The Mad Barron, am in need of an apprentice. An individual that will carry on my weird legacy. Details in the video below. I look forward to meeting whomever survives the gauntlet.
I mentioned Tolkien-inspired Metal last week and, coupled with the fantasy kick I seem to be on in all aspects, this seemed like a golden opportunity to showcase Erebos. There should be some out there already familiar with this solo artist however this album marks big change in the previous intrumental only trend: vocals. Partnering with a member from Armorer (who is now on my radar) these two fantastic wraiths have created a stellar album.
A Flame That Pierces With A Deadly Cold harbors epic tracks that sunder and swell as if a volcano and a tsunami were colliding, straight CATACLYSMIC. The showcase track for this week will be Whirlwinds of Flame however do give the rest of the album a listen. The Onslaught of Morgoth lures you in with a mystical beginning before thundering down upon you with unrelenting with broad, enchanting power. Of Dusk and Dawn marches onward with riveting riffs and resounding wails. And, of course, there is that sweet, sweet album art to tempt you should you resist. JUST LOOK AT IT! IT. IS. AWESOME!
Do some digging on Erebos on your own. Since fantasy is always about the mystery and adventure, let this week, and artists, bring you some spice to your routine. Until next week, press play, turn up the volume, and let the sound bolster your spirit. /,,/
You know, I usually have to hunt for delicious Metal treats however, due to some unknown algorithm or sorcery, YouTube has been surprising me lately. Now, I am sucker for album art so I find myself drawn to something simply by that aspect however the last few I have stumbled on have been pure gold. I'm talking liquid steel injected straight in your veins, I'm talking drowning in molten metal, I'M TALKING HOT BUCKETS OF IRON CASCADING ACROSS YOUR BODY! And so, here with are, honoring another Metal Monday with an artist that must possess a demon's soul, Firelink.
I call myself a gamer, been doing so for many decades, and as such am familiar with many different series and styles. Sadly, Dark Souls is not my cup of tea. I gave the first game a hard run but I found it to be awkward and difficult for the sake of being difficult. Before you cast me into the sun you so much praise, let me say that it is a great game series, no denying it. Lore wise, setting, story, art style, all fantastic, it's just not my type of game. I could bash my head against it and probably knock it out but (like Metal) there is so much out there I am already chasing or completing and I just don't have the energy to handle the rage that game would inevitably send me into. Alright, my worthless opinion is over, on to what really matters.
Firelink. What a glorious find. An album that conjures you to listen, beckons you to stay, haunts you when you leave. I woke up and one of the tracks was stuck in my head and I haven't listened to this album for a bit. The Inveterate Fire is a monstrous creation of which I can only hope for more. Beginning to end, track by track, progressive, melodic, blackened, death metal goodness. Need incentive? Go six minutes into Kindled or The First Sin and let them play. Always bonus points to me for long tracks especially when they are wild rides such as these. Besides being inspired by a game series, this is a welcome addition to fantasy metal, something different from the plethora of worthy Tolkien inspired artists. Bonus for any Americans, these wraiths are based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Each point to this artist covered only ranks them higher in my book.
Kindled will be the showcase track for this week.
It may only be five tracks yet you won't want those to end, just like those play throughs or defeats you climb back from, challenging you withstand its allure once more. Regardless of all my nonsense, this week will be marked by zeal and fire. You get knocked down, you get back up. You taste defeat? Wash it down with you enemies tears on the next round. SHAKE YOUR FIST AT THE GODS! STIR THE ANCIENTS WITH YOUR ANGER! MAY YOUR FLAME BURN HOTTER AND BRIGHTER! /,,/
Awaken by the fire at my feet
In this world of isolation, my sanity will deplete
My body is a vessel
Destined by fire, the last of its kind
Kindle it with flesh or let it fade and die
The stench of death paints the air in this endless cycle of despair
A murky would where souls are lost my hollow body is one with the dark
My final steps into the kiln, I'm left with one final choice
Condemned to the darkness, a flame that's sparkles
To die in fire or repeat the cycle
The age of darkness and souls, continued by mighty Gwyn
Flame will end, man will rise once again
Through the darkness, humanity restored
Link the fire
Bearer of the curse
In 2005, a demo was released called Hymn of the Wood by Noltem. Now, there isn't a whole lot to summon up as far as videos or information yet I stumbled onto this gem and found it haunting and melodic. Sorrowful, serene, and stirring, Noltem debuted with a beautiful demo. Rivers Held In Ice, Hymn of the Wood, and The Final Dawn are winding tracks that keep calling you back for more, pulling you into the black woods that only some venture. Give these three a listen and let yourself escape to the cold woods instead of the heat of the summer. Let these Connecticut wood wraiths lure you into the recesses of the trees, where all the wild things dwell. /,,/
It may be summer but a cold wind blows... Grima looms before us as they return with their third album Will of the Primordial. Pre-orders began 07/06/2019 and the release is for the beginning of August 2019. Cannot speak highly enough of these cold wraiths hailing from Siberia, there prowess and power growing evermore with each album. Check out the video below to hear Enisey and witness the creative madness from Grima! We will return once the album releases and my physical copy arrives, covered in black frost and old roots. /,,/
Falling like a stone,
Flying like a songbird
Crawling like a fox,
With Yenisei’s dawns.
Everything and none
Fright and happiness
The circle of the sun
Is spinning the spindle of fates
Like a whirlpool.
Wind in the hair,
And Yenisei waters' depths in the eyes.
Falling like a stone,
Flying like a songbird
Crawling like a fox.
It is about damn time for Bane to visit this page and with it unleash a wicked wind of haunting atmospheres and wraithlike energy. Necrodeath Ritual is short yet deliciously sweet. As always, Bane always astounds with their ambience alone, building up or exiting with stirring sounds. However, they are like a force of nature, calm and harmonious one moment, a cascading nightmare the next. Absolutely incredible work album after album.
This is a split with Neftaraka (whom I am shamefully unfamiliar with however I will fix that soon) but I am focusing this showcase on the Bane side of things. Melodic, black, and captivating, this portion of the split is a must for anyone seeking some tracks that rival those I love from the OST of Jin-Roh, while the black metal enthusiast will not be left without. The showcase track for this week will be In A Dying World (switching the blog track to The Final Destination for bonus effect).
The links below will provide the album rundown so give it a listen from beginning to end, let yourself be taken elsewhere, allow your mind to wander and sink into the deep. As always, a thanks to the Encyclopaedia Metallum for offering so much to those of us who chase and call the Metal. Now, go out, into that dying world, find those wraiths you can relate, and wail together while the moon still glows.
GRAB THE BLADE
We have arrived
To offer this gift
Grab the blade
And shatter the myth
Who are you?
What is this curse?
Take your blade
Leave with your kith
You are the chosen
The one who will bring the end
Seize the kris
Please slit your wrist
You must be mistaken
I am no such person
Something is amiss
Please lower your fist
We know what is
The deeds you shall do
Hand to hilt
Here you shall wilt
What tales you weave
Of the future lies
Leave the knife
And with your life
We beckon you
Please heed the signs
Here is the edge
You are close to the ledge
You are more bees
Than the sweet of honey
I need not your steel
To make you my meal
We are too late
This hallowed dagger
Will no longer stagger
I have awaited
The pawns of the fearful
With something sharp
To tear you apart
We have failed
To stop the end
We wield our knives
To end our lives
I will watch
As you and they
Fall upon your dirk
While I doom the world with my work
Some thing has an eye on you... This week we have The Eerie One as we return with Lęk and their most recent release. Yes, another week of Lęk because THEY ARE SO DELICIOUS! One of the only albums I have purchased twice (digital and physical) this four song creation is wicked dark and magically enthralling. Why twice? Well, I did not read the fine print on the digital version that there existed The Hidden Track. After letting this track pull me into the void and assail with me wailing tones I decided I must know of this extra song. To my delight, it is my favorite track of the four.
Forgotten Lakes shall be the showcase piece so that I can keep you in suspense yet I want to support this artist and keep the mystery of The Hidden Track all the more elusive. Somewhere in the woods, an recalled body of water, a place of old and soon, where the eerie one waits. Magical Void dances as it tells of leaving ones body and meeting the one beyond who you can haunt with eternally. Gody, with short but powerful lyrics, damns another from ever having eternity using the most potent energy of all, anger. And The Hidden Track? Well, you'll just have to order it and find out.
I enjoy mystery and the wonders that they summon whilst not being solved. May the greatest ones forever elude us until the stars die out...as do we. Let this week be full of vigorous malice, mystery, and mayhem! /,,/
(Purhcase Information & Lyrics)
Forgotten Lakes into the wood in the middle of the night.
The shining fluid illuminated by the moon and by the trillions of stars.
Unholy fluid, poisonous place, lake of the future and past.
The eerie one who rule the dark one day will devour the shallow beings.
The lord of the void, the lord of the darkness, the eerie one.
Marry me in this land of weirdness, take my soul don’t wait.
Far away from the universe only our love exists.
Whatever you are the eerie one, you are eternal like my longing.
I have recently found myself inspired when listening to certain tracks. Typically instrumental portions yet sometimes it can be the lyrical bits as well. As I lay down to slumber, my mind become agitated by doubt and depression. To combat this, I let my mind run loose, allowing it create something of the misery it tries to assail my with so often. Tonight’s delicious tale is dark, morbid, and mysterious. Perhaps this will be a welcome distraction for you as well. (Inspired by Burial by Pest)
A Dark Shape Slips Away
Along craggy coasts
I ride toward home
An isle of nightmares
Neath starless nights
I yearn to return
To look upon the spire
That hidden tower
I cast such wicked magicks
Disguising my bastion
Atop a summoned steed
I wince at the wounds
My den holds a remedy
And conjuring storms
I cover my retreat
Bone horse banished for boat
Against waters of fright
I no longer see a threat
Only my island awaits
Angry storm fed waters
I finally make anchor
At the dock of the dead
From shores of the damned
I look back across the waters
Behind a veil of unseen power
What had been collected
I carried the bag inside
Those walls so wretched
Echoes through the halls
I shed no tears
Bag squirming with fear
She pleads for her life
I shake my head no
Her life force is mine
As my tools go to work
I grin most ghastly
Filling a chalice with blood
Deep of the crimson gift
What I am
Into a beastly shape
What they call me
Humans and animal alike
I am the insatiable
Monster, demon, fiend
Oh... I have awaited this showcase. This week is monstrous visit with a dark visit from Poland artist Lęk. Darkness? Check! Melodic? Check! Grim? Check! This album checks all the right boxes for a mad soul such as mine, stirring those cold embers within with words of haunting wisdom and weight. Shadows of Black Souls is an astounding release, a frequent visitor to my dark days, and every track exudes with the power of what can only be some kind of pact with the shadows.
You want to talk about having a hard time picking a showcase track, this is the album. From beginning to end of this haunting journey so much is offered. Kick it off with Absencja Ducha with its phantasmal intro pausing for what sounds like a ghost train with visuals of a skeletal entity playing a guitar on top (think Mad Max: Fury Road but the frozen black metal version). Spiritual Satanism follows up with a soul stirring sojourn that is large and thunderous. As Leaves whirls in to plague us with thoughts of mortality and frailty like trees in an ill wind. That not enough stunning reflection for you? How about Possessed by Dark Sounds. Those lyrics haunt me as I read the words of another with a pain I know all too well, unknown to each in life but brothers in sorrow. Let us pause for something dark yet different, a gathering of what humans would call monsters but those of them would call family, Castle of Darkness. With a delicious music video, this track is even more astounding when you learn of all the creatures that gather in that place, living in the dark away from the what they know as monsters. Now, we get to the album named Shadows of Black Souls, a profound look at the corruption and confusion brought on by religious groups, a select few paralyzed by the reality of their lies and the what stirs in the shadows, the beautiful face of a fallen angel that loves freedom so much that he was damned for it. Odd how salvation is earned through slavery of your soul whereas freedom is considered damnation and sinful...
Second to last, and one of my favorites, Nostalgia. Kicking off with such furious energy, one would not think this track to be so tragic and yet so relatable. This is an artist that knows depression all too well and my heart aches with understanding, yet another reason I am so find of Lęk. And, such as I find depression to symbolize an ocean, we move on to the final track, the showcase piece, Mermaids. I'm just going to throw this out there... this should be on an album with Dethkloks Murmaider I & II. And here we have a heartrending tale of a man lured by the song of a mermaid with a grim end.
Beginning to end this album is beautiful. Lęk has, and still, astounds me with each release. Do yourself a kindness, listen to this album, read the lyrics, look into the darkness... The answers there are for you alone. /,,/
In the world of lie together with birth of human race, the had come
Equipped with tail and angelic voices towile the race of men
Mermaids - The beasts to drown the world
Beautiful outside and rotten inside
The lesbian plaque of the seas and oceans as well
Completly devoid of feelingsthat are known to humanity
Whores of water, living in the dark caves, attracting men searching for true love
Whores of water, living in the dark caves, singing carols of pure hate
Don't cry - under water your tears are not visible
The main rule is to get prepared to the ritual of devouring
in the temple of foolery to feed the bellies of the feminists
They will devour you with your beating heart, leaving only your bones
You have no choice, you cannot move, your rope is tied, your brath is hold,
Your hope is now dead!
And when she is loosening your chain, it is a new hope for you
for a while, you saw her marvelous eyes and felt the charm of her pale, soft hands
Ooooh.. mermaid, you are the one
Your kiss gave me second life
Your breath is my oxygen, MY LIFE!
You are not like your sisters
Your teeth aren't so sharp at all
Maybe you don't know what is the essence of the darknes, but you know what is love
Before we die, let's look at each other eyes
Before I die, let me see your smile
